gnudb - free remote CDDB database
I have not listened to CDs for many years. However, I have a few CDs in my collection that are impossible to find on Spotify or other streaming services. I don't have a portable CD player either, so there was a need to rip songs from CD to mp3 format.
I only have a CD drive on my Windows PC, where I've always used CDex for this type of action. In addition to ripping to MP3, this program also allows you to retrieve information about the tracks on the disc from the CDDB (Compact Disk DataBase). Unfortunately, the CDDB data providers available with the program no longer exist. Downloading of disc data is therefore not possible.
However, there is a GNUDBservice that has taken over the roles of a free CDDB data provider. All you need to do is add a new provider in the CDex settings:
Location: gnudb.gnudb.org
Address: gnudb.gnudb.org
Path: /~cddb/cddb.cgi
Port: 80
Protocol: HTTP
Your E-mail address: me@acme.com
More details at HowTo GNUDB.
From now on, when a CD is inserted, the programme will attempt to read the CD information itself.
