The Foolish Things We Do With Our Computers
This post is inspired by "The Foolish Things We Do With Our Computers" articles published in Linux Gazette by Ben Okopnik.
Couple years back I was working as a Project Manager in an IT company. As a normal thing in many corporations, the life cycle of the computers used by the employees comes to an end. Old desktop have been replaced and we got new HP laptops. Most of us have migrated everything to new laptop, and returned the old desktops. But not all.
Time goes by. The guy who still had the old desktop and new laptop got the role of our team leader. With new position, he got new laptop - also HP, but the slim one. But he still uses his old laptop, and the old desktop.
Couple months later, the team leader asked me to discuss one thing. Then I have understood why he need the desktop, and two laptops:
- New slim laptop with Windows 8 is completely free of any software and customization, despite of the remote desktop app and the VPN client.
- The desktop computer has all the software that is used on the daily basis. As this desktop PC runs Windows XP, recent versions of some of the software does not work. So...
- The old laptop, with Windows 7, has new versions of that software. This laptop does not have the tools that are works on Windows XP.
- Both desktop and old laptop stay in the office, always on.
The workflow:
- Slim laptop is a gateway to everything. He takes it to the meetings, home office, etc.
- When he needs to do something in the older tools, he connects from slim laptop to the desktop using RDP.
- If new tools are needed, he RDP from slim laptop to desktop, and from desktop to the old laptop.
Yes, this is a true story.
